Les deux derniers morceaux Brain damage et Eclipse

sont inséparables.

1 - Brain Damage

Originellement, la chanson s'appelait Dark Side of the

Moon, mais à cause des répétitions fréquentes de « I'll

see you on the dark side of the moon », l'album a

finalement pris ce nom et la chanson a reçu le titre Brain

Damage. À la radio, les stations diffusaient souvent

Brain Damage et Eclipse ensemble, du fait de leur

enchaînement.

Roger Waters a pris comme thème les troubles mentaux

de Syd Barrett, avec la phrase « I'll see you on the dark

side of the moon » (« je te reverrai sur la face cachée

de la lune ») qui s’explique aussi par sa relation affective

avec Barrett malgré son problème psychiatrique. La

phrase « And if the band you're in starts playing

different tunes » (« Et si ton groupe commence à jouer

d'autres morceaux ») évoque la fin de la collaboration de

Barrett avec le groupe.

Brain Damage comporte une phrase plutôt célèbre, « The

lunatic is on the grass... » (« Le fou est sur l'herbe »).

Les paroles vers la fin de la chanson se rapportent à une

lobotomie frontale. 

2 - Eclipse

La chanson a un ton intense. Vers la fin de la chanson, on

peut entendre un cœur battre pour créer une « boucle »

vers Speak to me. Dans certaines copies de l'album,

quand le cœur commence à battre, on peut entendre une

chanson des Beatles ou d'une symphonie, de fait, après

amplification de ce petit extrait, on reconnaît une

version orchestrale de Ticket to Ride des Beatles.

Any colour you like

L'origine du titre est nébuleuse. Elle pourrait faire

allusion à la réponse « You can have it any colour you

like » fréquemment donnée par l'un des technicien de

studio lorsque l'on lui posait des questions, en référence

à la description donnée par Henry Ford à propos de sa

voiture Model T: « You can have it any color you like, as

long as it's black. » (« Vous pouvez l'avoir dans la couleur

que vous voulez, tant que c'est du noir »).

Us and them:

Une bonne partie de la chanson a été conçue par Wright

bien avant l’enregistrement de Dark side of the moon. Il

s’agissait d’une improvisation pour le film Zabriskie Point

de Michelangelo Antonioni (1970), dont Pink Floyd a

composé une partie de la bande originale. Antonioni était

très exigeant avec le groupe, refusant presque tout ce

qu’il lui proposait. Par dépit et par fatigue, Wright s’est

mis à pianoter, alors que sur un écran était projeté un

des rushes du film, montrant une scène détaillant la

répression d’une manifestation. Le reste du groupe a

aussitôt aimé ce qu’il a joué, mais pas Antonioni, qui a

répondu : « C’est magnifique, mais trop triste. Cela me

rappelle trop l’église ». Le résultat, nommé alors The

Violent Sequence, ne fut pas retenu et est finalement

apparu sur Dark Side of the Moon.

1 - The great gig in the sky

Ce morceau emblématique de l’album est marqué par

l’invraisemblable improvisation vocale de Clare Torry.

Le groupe ayant une base musicale composée par Richard

Wright cherchait une voix à apposer sur la piste. Ils

demandèrent alors à cette chanteuse, qu'on venait juste

de leur présenter, de penser à l'horreur, à la mort, et de

chanter. Après quelques prises, elle sortit et s'excusa,

persuadée d'avoir mal chanté. Mais tout le monde dans le

studio fut bluffé par sa performance.

Clare Torry fut payée 30 £ de l'heure pour la prise de
son, soit 100 £ au total, ce qui était le tarif normal pour une choriste de studio qui interprète une œuvre. Mais, dans le cas présent, elle avait effectué une improvisation personnelle qui valait une création artistique et donnait donc droit à la perception de droits d'auteur. C'est à ce titre qu'elle réclama à EMI en 2004 - et finit par obtenir - le versement de royalties.
Bien qu'il n'y ait pas de réelles paroles, on peut entendre au début de la chanson un homme dire : And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do; I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it—you've gotta go sometime. (Et je n'ai pas peur de mourir. Qu'elle vienne à n'importe quel moment, je m'en fiche. Pourquoi devrais-je avoir peur de mourir ? Il n'y a aucune raison pour ça, tu dois t'en aller un jour) ; et aux environs de 3:35 une voix de femme : I never said I was frightened of dying (Je n'ai jamais dit que j'avais peur de mourir).
2 - Money

Avec le son de pièces de monnaie tombant au sol , Money

se moque de l'avidité et du consumérisme des gens, par

l'usage de paroles ironiques et des effets sonores liés à

l'argent (ironiquement, le single Money fut la chanson la

plus vendue de l'album) 

 

Money, get away.

Get a good job with good pay and you're okay.

Money, it's a gas.

Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.

New car, caviar, four star daydream,

Think I'll buy me a football team.

Money, get back.

Money, it's a hit.

2 – On the run - Time

Bien que n'étant pas un grand spécialiste de la musique pop, j'écoutais quand même la musique des années 70 et parfois je l'aimais... Comme ''Dark side of the moon''. Donc tous les jours ici un morceau de cet album qui m'a fait planer sans fumer quoique ce soit...

Album aujourd’hui mythique, véritable succès dès sa sortie, plébiscité par la critique à l’époque et encore aujourd’hui…. The Dark Side of the Moon sort le 10 mars 1973 aux Etats-Unis. L’album est le huitième opus studio de Pink Floyd. Il arrive tout de suite en tête des ventes aux Etats-Unis, grâce notamment au légendaire « Money ».

L’idée initiale de The Dark Side of the Moon vient de Roger Waters. Le musicien souhaite à l’époque écrire à propos de « ce qui rend les gens fous« . Une façon d’évoquer la démence de Syd Barrett (due à un abus de drogues) ainsi que les problèmes et les pressions auxquels le groupe doit faire face. Ainsi, l’album aborde des thèmes universels, de l’argent à la vieillesse en passant par le travail. La folie inspire également le titre de l’album et non l’astronomie, comme certains tendent à le penser.
Construit comme une pièce musicale continue, l’album fait partie des albums les plus vendus de tous les temps. Il fait partie du Bilboard 200 pendant 914 semaines, soit plus de 17 ans.
The Dark Side of the Moon est une expérimentation musicale historique. Devenu emblématique des Pink Floyd, l’album reste l’un des opus les plus vendus du groupe.
